Seated Area Refreshed & Tidied Up

We have completed tidying up the area opposite the church so we have a lovely space for anyone to relax and hopefully brighten the village up.

Thanks to Richard & Matt Coe for clearing the area and laying the flagstones and thanks to East Riding Council for providing the grant funding to do this.

Annual Duck Race Winners 2019

In keeping with tradition, the Annual Duck Race has been held on the last Sunday in October.  Unfortunately, this year we decided the beck was too high to hold a safe race. So on the bright sunny Sunday morning in Jon Los's garden, we randomly picked the winners for each race. We would like to thank everybody who purchased a duck and supported us and are delighted to let you know we've raised a grand total of £321 for the Church funds.

Bielby Mobile Library Service

For those of you that like to use the library but can't always make it to Pocklington the mobile library van comes to Bielby and stops near the College Arms, Main Street, Bielby. The next visit will be Mon, 24 Jun 2019 - 9.40am.

The mobile library van will also be in Melbourne today, Thursday 13th June from 3.25pm, near the shop/village hall.

The mobile library visits every 4 weeks.

Hedgehog Helper

A local hedgehog rescue would like to get in touch with the gentleman from Bielby who took a poorly hedgehog in to Wicstun’s vets in Pocklington two weeks ago, with a view to releasing it back to where it was found. Please call or text 07510 940473.

Pocklington Canal

Dear Bielby Parish Council,

A notice for the parish.

You will be aware of the recent works taking place along the canal, taking place as part of two projects currently in progress on the Pocklington Canal. I would like to give you an update on the progress of the two projects.

As part of the ‘A Gem in the Landscape’ project (Led by Canal & River Trust with Heritage Lottery Fund support) dredging and tree works have taken place over winter 2017/18. This included the dredging of a channel along the centre of the canal between Melbourne Arm and Walbut Lock, as well as thinning of trees along the eastern half of the canal (mainly between Coates Bridge and Canal Head). The large spend (capital) works have now been completed, and there will be no more large scale one-off habitat works this coming winter. We will be installing new visitor signs on the canal at certain points with information about the history and wildlife of the canal.

This ‘Gem’ project also includes an extensive events programme, which you can view here: https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/about-us/where-we-work/yorkshire-and-north-east/pocklington-canal-project The Main Event for 2018 is the Bicentenary Festival, which will take place on 28^th and 29^th July 2018.

The ‘Bicentenary Restoration Appeal’ project (led by Pocklington Canal Amenity Society with public donations and legacy grant support) is nearly complete. Recently PCAS have restored Walbut Lock. This, coupled with the restoration of Thornton Lock and the HLF funded dredging, will allow boats to travel along the canal to Bielby Arm. This will be the new Head of Navigation for the canal. Boats will be able to turn around in the ‘junction’ between the canal and the Arm – boats will not be encourage to travel along the Arm itself, and there are no plans to dredge/cut this.

You will likely be aware that PCAS have started fundraising for the restoration of Sandhill Lock. This is part of a long term vision (over 10 or 15 years) to see the canal restored for use by boats up to Canal Head. This vision forms a new Restoration Strategy for the canal, which has been approved by the Pocklington Canal Liaison Group (which includes CRT, PCAS, NE, ERYC, EA, YDAA, English Heritage).

Both of the projects described above are being run in partnership between CRT and PCAS – whilst there are different lead organisations, both include the Liaison Group.  The lead organisation is responsible for the delivery of each project.

In addition, to coincide with the Bicentenary Festival (part of the ‘Gem’ project), PCAS are organising a Boat Rally at Melbourne Arm between 27^th – 29^th July.

East Riding Mobile Library Service

East Riding Library Service has launched a new streamlined Mobile Library Service in October 2017. The new service is significantly different from our previous offer and the sites we visit in your parish may have changed in frequency, duration or day of the week the library visits.

The attached document lists the dates the Mobile Library will be in operation until the end of 2018, along with the site address and time.

Bielby Music Festival 2017

Thanks to everyone who helped set up before and tidy up after the festival. Comments received, suggest it was the best yet!!! I have this morning, sent off a cheque to Marie Curie for well over £600, with the money the Marie Curie people raised on their stalls still to add to the total.

Thanks to all of you who came and made a great audience!

Cars Parking On Pavement

I have been asked to give a polite reminder that parking on pavements is illegal and dangerous for pedestrians as this causes pedestrians to walk in the road. So if all villagers and their guests could just be reminded of this it would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Tracing Family History

I have received the email below.

I wonder if anyone can help . I have been looking into my family background and a family bible informs me that my paternal grandmother was born in Bielby on 10th June 1881.
Her name was Hannah Jane Smith and I believe she had three sisters and one brother. Although unlikely I wondered if any of the family descendants still live in the village or area . My wife and I visit Pocklington regularly during the summer and have visited the village on several occasions.

Rural Health Van

Paul has sent this email - An action on me from the last Parish meeting was to look at the possibility of getting the rural health van to Bielby. They are prepared to come to Bielby in April on a date we choose. They require a venue that a large vehicle can turn round and a maximum of 6 people per visit, but if we get more people interested they will visit again. Could I ask if anybody is interested in having a health check please let me know and what day of the week is best for you. I would appreciate a reply ASAP as I have to let the health team know in the New Year. Thanks Paul. You can contact Paul by phone on 318077.
