Bielby’s day will be following the national programme of events that will be taking place across the UK.

• If anyone is free to help tidy out the barn on Saturday 3rd May please pop down from 10am.

• You are invited to take tables and chairs to the barn for your group on Sunday 4th May from 10am.

• There will be some tables & chairs available for anyone not able to do this  (please let Dawn know if  you would like to use one of these - 07733262543).

• Please bring your own picnic and drinks with you to the party. Make sure you remember the crockery, cutlery, cups and glasses that you need. (these will not be supplied).

•    Please also bring a bag to take your rubbish away with you. 

     If you want to dress in 40’s style clothes of any kind please feel free – the more the merrier but this is NOT a requirement of joining the celebration.

VE Day Celebrations

As the VE Day celebrations are approaching, it feels timely to give you an update.

The village will be decorated around 9th April so you will see some bunting and signs appear. Please join us by adding your own additional decorations to houses and gardens. 

For those of you who enjoy dressing up – you are most welcome, particularly for the party. Please wear anything relevant and meaningful to you.  

Dressing up is by no means a requirement of joining the celebrations!

VE Day Celebrations

The organising team is preparing the VE Day celebrations that will take place in Bielby on Thursday 8th May. 

Village residents and their families are invited to join the various events throughout the day - more details will be shared soon.

In the meantime we are gathering content to bring the celebration to life. 

We are very keen to gather stories, photographs and any form of memorabilia from the 1940’s. Please help up us with anything that you would like to share around the 2nd World War, armed forces, family life, rural life, and what that time period means to you and your relatives.

National events will be taking place throughout the UK. Bielby Parish is taking part in the shared moment of celebration and has registered participation as part of this historic occasion.

All residents are encouraged to participate in decorating with banners, flags and wearing fancy dress. Sharing wartime stories and photographs.

Bielby Church Services & Duck Race

 Bielby Church: Services and Duck Race

In addition to our usual Holy Communion services at 9.15 am on the first and third Sundays of the month, here are the forthcoming 'specials':

Friday 1st September 7.30 pm - St Giles's Day Festival Communion, followed by light refreshments

Sunday 1st October 6.30 pm - Harvest Festival, followed by light refreshments. Any donations of food items (in tins or packets) to decorate the church will be gratefully received and given to the The People's Pantry, our local food bank. It is currently very much in demand.

Sunday 12th November 10.50 am - Remembrance Day Service at the churchyard war memorial, followed by wreath-laying at the canalside RAF memorial

Wednesday 20th December (time to be arranged) - Bielby Carol Service

Everyone is welcome to any service.

The Duck Race

The Race was always a brilliant event for the village community and a very helpful fund-raiser to maintain our village church. It was a great family occasion on the last Sunday in October, at the end of half term, when everyone had just had an extra hour in bed!

Well, we still have the plastic ducks, the beck and the bridge, but the church members who staged the Race are now in their 60s and 70s and rather past clambering up and down the beck.

If any younger, nimbler, villagers would be ready to stage the Duck Race, the church 'old hands' would be very thankful and ready to explain and advise how to go about it.

If anyone is interested in getting the ducks afloat again, and in so doing supporting our village church, please have a word with anyone you know on the Church Council, or contact churchwarden john_peel@btopenworld.com

Please come along and support our reformed team after an 8 year gap.

It's called the Canon Hedley trophy for local villages where the only rule is that you must live in the parish.

       Adult tickets at £10.00, under 16’s free.

  Bring your own drinks please, but tea and coffee will be available (with some limited home brew!!!!) at half time.

 

As some of you will know Soundsphere have been performing live for many years and have toured USA, UK and Ireland and Europe extensively (and Bielby Music festival!). Soundsphere are Paula Ryan, Sarah Dean and Judith Simpson, they sing acapella with power and passion with delightful harmonies, sometimes with percussion, a wide range of songs from around the world. The proceeds of the concert will contribute towards the cost of recording a new album.

Clapping and Cheering For Keyworkers 8pm

Morning everyone,

Tonight the nation are geared up for another 8pm clap and cheer to show our appreciation for all the key workers who are tirelessly saving lives, risking their own, looking after our loved ones, keeping us fed, serving essentials, collecting our refuse and much, much more. Would be great to have a strong turn out this eve...front doors, back doors or windows.

Hope everyone is keeping safe.

VE Celebrations Request For Help & Ideas

We are looking for help and ideas to put together a VE Celebration on Friday 8th May 2020 which will be a public holiday.

Some suggestions so far are:

• Ridsdale's big barn is available for the Friday to do a village VECelebration. (Could be like the jubilee celebrations). Or village marquee is available. 
• Afternoon into early evening event, start and finish times to be confirmed.
• General street party ambience with afternoon tea dance style celebration. 
• Everyone brings some savoury and sweet items for a shared afternoon tea and bring own drinks. 
• Dress code smart casual, optional fancy dress in 1940/50's civilian attire or armed forces uniform. Perhaps a prize for the best fancy dress or best Vera Lynn or Winston Churchill look alike?
• Could get children in village to do table decorations (make some poppies) and banners. 
• Entertainment could be period music on a CD player to dance to. Or 1940's singalong and other music (recorded or live depending on available musical volunteers!)
• Photos displayed of villager's family members who were in the war, Women's land army or homefront. With a little paragraph about them and their war effort. 
• Listen to Winston Churchill's speech declaring end of war to start VE celebrations/ could project the footage onto the barn wall to watch. 
• Entrance fee: free for all Bielby residents and guests.

These are just ideas. A group of us are going to get together in the next week or so to organise the celebrations.

VE Day 75th Anniversary Celebration and Community Fund

Hi, please see the letter below from the council saying there is a pot of money to be applied for if we want to celebrate the 75^th Anniversary of VE day. We did mention this at the last meeting however nobody has shown any interest in it. Please let me know if anybody is interested in Bielby celebrating this and if we want to try to get some funding. Dear Parish or Town Clerk 

East Riding of Yorkshire Council VE Day 75th Anniversary Community Fund 

We are pleased to announce that East Riding of Yorkshire Council is establishing a new small grant fund (approximately £20,000) to support communities across the East Riding which are planning to hold commemorative events up to and around the 8/9/10 May 2020. 

All Parish and Town Councils in the East Riding are eligible to apply for the community fund. Parish and Town Councils may also submit their application in partnership with other groups or organisations as long as the Parish and Town Council is the lead applicant. 

The fund will be available to help with the costs of appropriate related activities (e.g. community events, street decorations, themed artwork). Applicants can apply for a maximum of £500 and a minimum of £100 per project. Successful projects must be directly related to the VE Day 75th Anniversary and demonstrate community benefit and/or community input. 

The fund is due to open for applications on 28 February 2020. There will be a short application form available online from that date, and further details of the fund criteria and the application process are available at: www.eastriding.gov.uk/VE75fund 

Applications will be assessed and awarded on a rolling basis and applicants will be advised of the Council’s funding decision by email as quickly as possible. The final application deadline will be at noon on Monday 27 April 2020, subject to sufficient grant funds remaining. 

We trust this new grant fund will be of interest to your Parish or Town Council, and if you have any queries in the meantime please do not hesitate to contact the Fund Administrator by email at: rural@eastriding.gov.uk.

Halloween Pumpkin Carving At Stoneleigh Tuesday 29th October 2-4pm

Dale is going to do another Halloween pumpkin carving event like last year, which was a brilliant afternoon.

So Dale is inviting any children of Bielby who would like to come to Stoneleigh on Tuesday 29th October at 2pm till 4pm to come and carve a pumpkin.

Dale thought the children might come in Halloween costumes, and Dale will hollow out the pumpkins so they’re ready to carve when the children arrive. They'll put on a Halloween tea. There will be a boy and girl prize for the younger children and a boy and girl prize for the older children.

It was a brilliant afternoon last year and all the children, parents, grandparents and residents had a lovely time all together. Thanks Dale and the Stoneleigh team for asking us back again, we can't wait to pop over for some Halloween fun.

Let me or Dale know you are coming so Dale can organise Pumpkins. Thanks.

Tea@2 in Melbourne Chapel 18th September

The September Tea@2 on the 18th of Sept in Melbourne Chapel will be a Macmillan Tea/Coffee event. ALL proceeds will be donated to this worthy cause. If you would be willing to help on the day, maybe make us a cake or two etc, donate a raffle prize or something for the bring and buy stall please get in touch. It is from 2-4pm, Admission is £4 which includes ALL your refreshments.Takeaways will be available for a donation from 3.30pm if you wanted cake to take home. All very welcome.
