Road Repairs

 Road Repairs

Villager may have noticed a copious use of yellow paint on roads in and around the village. These are indicating where repairs are necessary and will be carried out in the next month or so.

I am advised that only the areas marked in yellow will be repaired as the cost of tarmac has increased substantially as a result of the war in Ukraine.

I am reliably informed that we will receive seven day’s notice of when the work will commence (unlike the emergency closure of the road at the Everingham end of the village).

Once we have been advised I will update the Bielby BLOG. It will help the council repair team if residents can avoid parking on or near any of the yellow road marking.

Thanks,

Chris Emptage

Raising Money For Hearing Dogs

Some of you may be aware that James and Elizabeth Jones from the village have been undertaking several daredevil activities in preparation for a 100m abseil down The Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth in aid of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. The preparations included: GoApe (where Elizabeth spent most of her time suspended upside down), 250m zipwire over a lake with an undignified landing (Elizabeth again) 150ft abseil into the abyss at Magna, (Elizabeth’s glove got caught in the equipment, are you seeing a theme here…) and several short abseils off a bridge in Derbyshire, (no mishaps this time!). On 3rd July, we completed the final challenge and abseiled down the Spinnaker Tower and we both lived to tell the tale. So far we have raised £1,215 for the charity through our JustGiving page, which can be found here if you would like to contribute: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/goingdownwiththejoneses

or donations can be made in person to James or Elizabeth.

Bid for Wolds AONB

Cllr Leo Hammond is supporting the bid for Wolds Weighton to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), he says; "As one of the ERYC councillors who has been pushing for our fantastic area to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, I hope that you and your councillors will join me in supporting this campaign by providing Natural England with information on local heritage and landscape assets within your parishes.

If we are successful at securing this national status, it will give us additional planning powers to protect our beautiful area from overdevelopment and the wrong type of development, as well as allowing us to expand our tourism economy in a sustainable way (both for the environment and local residents).

As you can see, the first round of drop-in sessions are not in our area, but I am sure information will come forward shortly with the details of ones being held in our part of the Wolds."

The drop in sessions have finished, but you can have your say via the weblink to the homepage and following the links to the "have your say" https://www.yorkshire-wolds-designation-project.org/home

Springboard Summer Tour

The ‘Summer Tour’ is engaging with 16–24-year-olds across the East Riding and speaking to them about helping with their next steps to education, further training or employment.

The programme is fully funded and residents not in education or employment and living in the East Riding can access the help and advice from personal advisers located across the East Riding including Beverley, Bridlington, Goole, Hessle and Withernsea.

This is an opportunity for residents to come and have a chat about their future and learn about what the council can do to help with those essential next steps and answer any questions on the Springboard Programme.

The Springboard programme includes 1:1 and group sessions covering a range of topics including:
  • Mental toughness and well-being,
  • Communication skills,
  • Managing money,
  • Building self-esteem,
  • Building self-confidence,
  • How to engage with employers,
  • Interview skills,
  • CV help and guidance.

The programme can be tailored to suit needs and we can also signpost to other partners and services if required.

Councillor Jane Evison, portfolio holder for economic investment, growth and tourism at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, commented: “This is a fantastic opportunity for young people in a number of areas across the East Riding to attend one of these summer roadshow events and learn how the Springboard Programme can help them take those next steps – whether it be in education, training or employment.

For further enquiries, contact the Springboard team via email: springboard@eastriding.gov.uk or take a look at the Facebook page @SpringboardEastRiding for more information.
