Emergency Procedures

Emergencies like road accidents, fires and medical emergencies happen somewhere in the country almost every minute of every day and are dealt with quickly and efficiently by the emergency services.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council (ERYC) and other responding organisations have emergency plans in place for larger events that stretch the resources of the emergency services and affect large numbers of people or the environment.

How Town & Parish Councils will be notified of an Emergency

Town and Parish Councils will always be notified about a declared emergency that they will be affected by.  The type of notification will depend on the type of emergency and is outlined below.  Elected Members will also be notified in the same way.

• In the event of a localised emergency that impacts on one or a small number of towns or parishes, the clerk will usually be telephoned by the Head of Service who is co-ordinating the Council’s response to the emergency.  The Head of Service will be known as a Control Centre Manager when they are in this co-ordination role. 

• In the event of a wide area emergency that impacts on many wards across the East Riding of Yorkshire, initial notification is likely to come from an email sent from ‘alertparish’, the Emergency Planning team or from the Emergency Control Centre.

• If you have signed up for our text alert service you may also be sent an SMS with information. Texts will begin with EmgncyAlert, you will not be able to respond directly to these notifications but if you have any questions please contact the Customer Service Centre.

There is often an information vacuum at the start of an emergency, with responding organisations trying to ascertain exactly what has happened and what the consequences are.  However, the notification will take place as soon as possible after arrangements have been put into place to implement the Council’s response to an emergency.  

Communicating with Town and Parish Councils during an Emergency

The Town and Parish Council emergency hotline will usually be the primary point of contact for you during an emergency.  Information about the emergency response will be cascaded by the Emergency Control Centre, and the switchboard will be able to direct any queries or issues towards the appropriate Council teams.  It is likely that to take some time to respond to enquiries during the initial stages of an emergency.

The Council’s website will also be fully updated with information during an emergency.

The equipment is located on Main Street in the decommissioned B.T. phone box near the old College Arms Public House (which is now closed).

Village News, Flooding, Devolution, Wellbeing and Hagg Bridge

 Happy New year to everyone, It's off to a very wet start, but thankfully no serious flooding. (I don't think??)

East Riding message on flooding events;

We are aware of multiple instances of flooding across the East Riding. Our teams have been and continue to be out working to keep residents safe along with our many partners including Humberside Police, Humberside Fire and Rescue and the Environment Agency.

We are working with partners to ensure that pumping is taking place across the East Riding at the locations in the greatest need of relief.

Our services are stretched but we are getting out to all locations.

Please advise residents to keep away from flood waters and swollen rivers, and not to drive through flood water. It is often deeper than it looks and just 30cm of flowing water is enough to float your car.

Driving through flooded roads can also push water into homes.

Latest information, advice and regular updates will be shared on the East Riding of Yorkshire council website and our Facebook.

This includes advice for residents about what the council and other partners can do to help in the event of flooding, and what residents can do to help themselves and safeguard their properties.

Hagg Bridge works to restart Monday 8 January

Hagg Bridge will be closing on Monday 8 January so our contractors can carry out the remaining works.

This will involve waterproofing and resurfacing. Signage will be placed out across the diversion route to inform road users of the closure and diversions.

The works are expected to be completed by Monday 15 January subject to weather conditions.

ERYC Weather Warnings

The MET Office have issued a number of weather warnings for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for periods of prolonged and heavy rain.  

The Council and its multi-agency partners have met today to review the situation and ensure appropriate resources are on standby, and we will continue to monitor and respond if required.     

We will keep you updated, and it is worth keeping an eye on the Met Office and EA updates - please see links attached.

New Floodline Number

New Floodline Number

We have been advised by the Environment Agency that the Floodline telephone number 0845 988 1188 is being deactivated on 1 April 2018 with only 0345 988 1188 being available. 

Any calls made to the 0845 from the beginning of April will receive a recorded message asking them to redial the 0345 version.  This message will remain in place until October 2018 after which any calls to the 0845 number will be to a dead line.

Flood Liason Group Meeting

Flood Liaison Group

The next meeting of the Flood Liaison Group, to be chaired by Councillor Fraser, will be held at County Hall, Cross Street, Beverley, HU17 9BA on Friday, 20 March 2015 at 10:00am.  The meeting will last no more than two hours and the agenda and relevant paperwork will be sent out nearer the time.

Due to the number of town and parish councils and flood action groups in the East Riding I regret that places will have to be limited to ONE representative per organisation.

If you let Paul know if you would like to attend.

The Authority would also welcome from representatives the submission of any questions about flooding issues that have not previously been answered.  In order to afford the Council the opportunity of fielding those questions it would be appreciated if details could be forwarded in writing or email by Friday,6 March 2015.

Information About Flooding

I have received an email from Richard Watts who said, "I am in the process of buying a property in Crudhall Lane, my family and I have been really looking forward to this move. However our survey says this is a flood risk area. Can anyone tell us of any history of flooding problems and or how well the beck and rivers are maintained/flood defences. Thanks for your help."
