St Giles's, Bielby, Harvest Festival will be at 6.00 pm this coming Sunday, 6th October.
Everyone is welcome to come along to the celebration.
As usual, villagers can help The People's Pantry, our local food bank, by leaving donations of tinned and packeted food (please check BBE details) on the table near the church door (open 10 - 6 this coming Thursday, Friday and Saturday).
We shall decorate the church with your donations and then pass them to our food bank. The People's Pantry is increasingly in demand and always grateful for Bielby's contributions.
We look forward to seeing everyone who can join us.
Bielby has a new display board tracing its long and colourful past. Mr John Peel, retired Pocklington School history teacher and village resident, researched and wrote this new account.
He explained, ''This project results from my years of studying the local landscape, talking to villagers and visitors and researching in York University's Borthwick Archive and the ERYC online archive.
''Several villagers helped with scanning photographs and fixing the board in place. My wife Barbara has been a great support throughout, always on hand for a valuable second opinion.
''A special mention must go to Stephen Smith who some years ago found in Merton College, Oxford, the map it drew up in 1613 when it bought Bielby manor. Merton kindly gave permission to reproduce the map and college shield. It has requested a copy of the display for its archive.
Mr Peel added that Phil Gilbank of Pocklington History Society was most helpful and put him in touch with designer Harriet Dorman of Burnby and board manufacturer M4UK of York.
''Harriet was so creative and responsive to work with, while M4UK knew just what to do,'' said Mr Peel. ''Both have served Bielby well.''
The board is now in place near the church in time for Heritage Open Days. Even as it was slotted into the ground walkers from Huddersfield scanned it eagerly and villagers came for an appreciative look. Like them, future readers are sure to find a few surprises about little Bielby.
Stoneleigh will be holding their annual pumpkin carving event on Tuesday 29th October at 14.30pm.
So please let Dale know if your children/grandchildren would like to attend along with yourselves.

The combined team of Bielby Hayton & Shiptonthorpe travelled to Escrick on Friday evening and despite being underdogs came away with the Canon Hedley Trophy with an excellent performance with all team members contributing.
It's a unique competition for villages in the area where the only rule is that all players must reside within the parish boundary.
The make up of the team was 6 from Bielby 3 from Hayton& 2 from Shiptonthorpe.

Emergencies like road accidents, fires and medical emergencies happen somewhere in the country almost every minute of every day and are dealt with quickly and efficiently by the emergency services.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council (ERYC) and other responding organisations have emergency plans in place for larger events that stretch the resources of the emergency services and affect large numbers of people or the environment.
How Town & Parish Councils will be notified of an Emergency
Town and Parish Councils will always be notified about a declared emergency that they will be affected by. The type of notification will depend on the type of emergency and is outlined below. Elected Members will also be notified in the same way.
In the event of a localised emergency that impacts on one or a small number of towns or parishes, the clerk will usually be telephoned by the Head of Service who is co-ordinating the Council’s response to the emergency. The Head of Service will be known as a Control Centre Manager when they are in this co-ordination role.
In the event of a wide area emergency that impacts on many wards across the East Riding of Yorkshire, initial notification is likely to come from an email sent from ‘alertparish’, the Emergency Planning team or from the Emergency Control Centre.
If you have signed up for our text alert service you may also be sent an SMS with information. Texts will begin with EmgncyAlert, you will not be able to respond directly to these notifications but if you have any questions please contact the Customer Service Centre.
There is often an information vacuum at the start of an emergency, with responding organisations trying to ascertain exactly what has happened and what the consequences are. However, the notification will take place as soon as possible after arrangements have been put into place to implement the Council’s response to an emergency.
The Town and Parish Council emergency hotline will usually be the primary point of contact for you during an emergency. Information about the emergency response will be cascaded by the Emergency Control Centre, and the switchboard will be able to direct any queries or issues towards the appropriate Council teams. It is likely that to take some time to respond to enquiries during the initial stages of an emergency.
The Council’s website will also be fully updated with information during an emergency.

The honourable members of the show comittee met over coffee and cakes (it being dry January and I had no alcohol in the house!) and we set a date for the 32nd Bielby Produce show to be held on Saturday 3rd August 2024. At Stoneleigh, with thanks again to Dale and all the team there.
A preliminary list of categories is attached here to enable you to get your seeds planted in good time and also practice your baking/pickling/fermenting/knitting etc etc.
Just a note on the beetroot and carrots, we have asked for trimmed tops; Mike, the judge last year advised that we ask for this so we dont get overwhelmed with profuse amounts of leafy tops on the display tables. Trim them to approx 75mm if you would.
As you may be aware, ERYC and Hull City council are Consulting on the proposal to allow some central government control to local control. Consultation ends on February 27th.

A member of the council's cabinet will be at each event, along with one of the council's devolution experts. Printed copies of the survey will be available, and help will be on hand for those who need it.
A new environmental strategy is being drawn up to enhance and restore nature in East Yorkshire, with the help of local communities.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council is leading on the creation of the Hull & East Yorkshire Local Nature Recovery Strategy (HEY LNRS), working with partner organisations including Hull City Council.
Local Nature Recovery Strategies were introduced as part of the Environment Act (2021) to help deliver the Government's vision for a Nature Recovery Network across England.
The HEY LNRS will identify local priorities for nature recovery, proposing ways to enhance existing nature hotspots and to create new habitats. It will also incorporate wider environmental goals, such as water and soil quality improvement, flood alleviation, and climate change mitigation.
Councillor Paul West, cabinet member for environment, said: "We want to make sure this new strategy meets the needs of our communities, farmers, businesses and, of course, our wildlife.”

Update from the Project Team, We started constructon of the project late last year, which will be completed in three phases:
Phase 1: 2023-2024: Site mobilisation and grid connection
Phase 2: 2024-2025: Greener Grid Park construction
Phase 3: 2025: Solar Farm construction
At this time we can share information on Phase 1:
• Siemens Energy are contracted to undertake this phase of works.
• The temporary 30mph zone along Melbourne Road near Allerthorpe is to increase road safety until site entrance works are completed, which we expect will be by the end of this year.
• Temporary traffic lights will be required at the site entrance for approximately one month. We expect them to be in place early February.
This is a temporary situation for one month at the site entrance only, to minimise disruption to local traffic.

Halls of South Acre Farm, Melbourne have contacted me to let villagers know that due to the bridge closure at the Thornton end of Marketbridge Lane, they are unable to access fields from that direction, and will need to bring tractors and trailers through Bielby instead.
It should only be for a couple of days, and will be at some point over the next week or two. They will be asking drivers/contractors to drive considerately through the village. Apologies in advance for any inconvenience.
