Scams awareness month
The Citizens Advice Bureau is joining forces with the Trading Standards Institute to launch a campaign to help ordinary people fight back by helping them spot and stop scams.
Con-artists are coming up with new ways to prey on people, from landlords renting out non-existent flats to bogus job offers and training opportunities. It’s easy to get scammed if you don’t know the signs.
There are hundreds of scams, including fake lotteries and prize draws, bogus health cures, dodgy
investment schemes, pyramid selling, and phishing. It is estimated that nearly half the people in the UK have been targeted and £3.5 billion lost to scams every year. During May, the Citizens Advice Bureau will provide advice and information about how to spot a scam, to give residents the confidence toreport these criminals and stop the scams. New scams appear as morepeople become aware of them and as criminals try to
keep one step ahead. To find out more, contact Matthew Cawley, consumer empowerment partnership officer, Hull and East Riding CAB on (01262) 605644 or matthew.cawley@hulleastridingcab.org.uk
Bogus callers
In the first two weeks of April alone, East Riding residents lost thousands of
pounds to deceitful bogus workmen, claiming they can offer them a service like
re-pointing roof tiles, plumbing repairs or maintenance work for cash, when they
actually do no work or a very poor job at an inflated price.
We would all like to think that people would not pressure an already vulnerable
person into buying an over-inflated service on their own doorstep. But sadly this
is one of the oldest tricks in the book for rogue traders to get quick cash. The
majority of East Riding victims are older and vulnerable residents. Victims quite
often feel ashamed or embarrassed that they were tricked into taking a service
they did not need and fell for the ‘hard sell’.
The police are clamping down on this type of crime. Chief Inspector James
Glansfield said: “Generally speaking, it is very rare for genuine traders to cold
call. If they do, they must:
give seven days’ cancellation notice
give a written quotation
give a contact telephone number and, more importantly, a contact address.
He added: “No money should be exchanged prior to the work being carried
out. If the tradesperson offers to take you to the bank, threatens, intimidates
or is aggressive towards you, you should call the police immediately.”
Loan scam warning
Trading standards officers warn that local people are being targeted by bogus
loan operators trying to con them out of hundreds of pounds. Some loan firms
are targeting those with a poor credit rating who have been searching online for
a loan. Firms are contacting potential customers by text, email or cold call and
misleading them into handing over money upfront for loans that are never
arranged.
The officers report that this is a new type of scam nationally and there are
reports of applicants in the East Riding paying hundreds of pounds by bank
transfer to get a loan quickly, but then receiving nothing in return. Bogus firms
are not authorised to provide credit services and customers who use them have
little or no chance of getting their money back when they make an upfront
payment for a loan.
Trading standards advice to those looking for a loan is to always check out loan
firms by looking online at www.fca.org.uk or by calling 0800 111 6768.

Bulk oil buying
Humber and Wolds Rural Community Council (HWRCC), working with East
Riding of Yorkshire Council, has completed five monthly bulk oil purchasing
rounds for this county-wide scheme. Anyone can benefit from cheaper heating
oil in East Yorkshire by becoming a member. Membership, normally £20 for a
household, is free to the first 200 members so there is still a chance to join the
scheme for nothing and see if you can save money on buying heating oil.
Each month, HWRCC collates the quantity ordered by members and rings six
suppliers to get their best price. The minimum quantity is 500 litres and the
price is the same irrespective of quantity ordered. In April, over 20,000 litres
was ordered, giving a 7.52p per litre saving for members against the highest price
quoted for a single 500 litre order - the price negotiated was 50.43p + VAT.
Membership forms are available at www.hwrcc.org.uk at the bottom of the
scheme’s page, or contact them on (01430) 430904 or email oil@hwrcc.org.uk
HWRCC is also looking for village co-ordinators for the scheme, to collate
orders from members in their village and email them on the order deadline date.
Coordinators help promote the scheme in their village using the leaflets provided
– in return they get free membership.
HWRCC is working with Hull and East Yorkshire Credit Union to help residents
who find it hard to buy oil because of high up-front costs. For a confidential chat,
contact Peter Hirschfeld, rural energy advice officer on (01430) 434047.
Bulk energy purchase
East Riding residents can once again save money on their gas and electricity bills
through YORSwitch, as registration is open to 10 June. The collective switching
scheme has already saved residents £175,000. Average savings are increasing as
collective switching becomes more popular with both consumers and suppliers.
The scheme works by gathering together people who are interested in finding
out if they can save money on their energy bills. YORSwitch organises an auction
for energy suppliers and the supplier providing the cheapest tariff will send an
offer to all registrants. The offer is obligation-free and registrants do not have to
switch. However, for those who do switch, YORSwitch takes care of the whole
process and ensures that residents will not be without energy during the switch.
Residents can register for free and find out more information at
www.eastriding.gov.uk/yorswitch. All the information required to register can be
found on your latest energy bill. If residents do not have access to the internet,
they can visit their local customer service centre or call (01482) 393939.

Volunteers Week
This annual celebration of the fantastic contribution millions of volunteers make
across the UK takes place from 1-7 June, its 30th anniversary. Everyone is invited
to join in – it is up to you to decide exactly how. Events can be publicised on the
official Volunteers’ Week website by following the link:
http://volunteersweek.org/events
ERVAS is working with Volunteen and the Volunteer Centre to run a volunteering
and community roadshow, visiting towns and villages across the East Riding over
the week of 23 June. They would love to promote volunteering opportunities on
behalf of organisations, to help to get more volunteers signed up and promote
services to members of the public / other organisations. The events will also give
a chance to network with staff and volunteers from other organisations.
If you would like more information on the roadshow or showcasing events /
volunteers, email Anne Watkins at anne@ervas.org.uk or phone (01482) 871077.
Tyas Treats - changing young lives locally
This local charity helps vulnerable children in East Yorkshire who are in difficult
and vulnerable situations, by giving them a much-deserved treat of their choice.
They can request anything they wish no matter how large or small and the charity
will see what they can do.
Maybe there is a family you know who are going through a hard time whose child
could do with a little boost. If so, tell them about the charity or get in touch
yourself and nominate someone.
There is an application form on the website at www.tyasfoundation.co.uk
The charity has allocated a sum of money to give away in June and July, and needs
applications before 31 May.
