The Battle of the Somme began on 1st July 1916. It is considered the most tragic day in British military history: almost 20,000 soldiers were killed and some 40,000 wounded on that single day.
Nationwide there will be services and vigils of remembrance on 30th June and 1st July.
We shall hold a short memorial gathering, open to all, in Bielby churchyard on Thursday 30th June at 10.00 pm (22.00), just as in 2014 we observed the 100th anniversary of World War I's outbreak.
