Wireless Internet Service

I noticed in todays Pocklington Post (23rd Nov) that an East Yorkshire company called Quickline Communications has just installed a mast near Pocklington. This will provide a wireless internet service which promises to give a much faster data transmission rate than the current copper cables from the Melbourne telephone exchange. Typically we get around 0.7 MB/sec download speeds with BT but Quickline suggests their system speeds could be up to 40 MB/sec. Their website suggests that Bielby would be well within the coverage range of the Pocklington mast.

The advertised cost is a bit higher than the available wired systems but not unduly so. We are considering trying the service and would be interested to know if anyone else in the village has already obtained a connection to this supplier. If anyone has any information we would be interested to know and, if we finally take the plunge and give it a go, we will let you know how it performs.

Burglary In Village

“As many of you will already be aware, there was a break in on Tuesday evening at 5pm in the village. The Police investigating have asked that we report anything that could be of help, so if you saw any unusual cars parked in or near the village at around 5pm Tuesday or have seen anyone acting suspiciously recently please contact PC Jo Green at Humberside Police by dialing 101 and then extension 5883.

Also, if you have a ladder missing they would like to hear from you.

It would be worthwhile being extra vigilant about security as there have been a number of houses broken into in the surrounding area recently.”

Feedback On Bielby Road Issues

Paul has received the following email regarding the issues residents recently raised regarding the roads in the area.

Paul
Thank you for your recent email. I have looked at the issues in your email in conjunction with the Bielby Village Taskforce maintenance schedule as there is some overlap between them.

Gale Carr Lane

Although the lane is rough in places it does not contain any actionable defects as of yesterdays inspection. I propose to inspect the road again in the spring with a view to carrying out some localised patching works if required subject to funding being available.

Footpaths/Hedges

On yesterdays inspection I could not see any hedges that were causing am obstruction to the footpath and require cutting back. I did note though that one or two hedges did appear to have recently been cut. If you have specific addresses that you would like me to inspect please forward them on to me.

Potholes Bielby to Hayton.

Numerous tickets have been issued this financial year for potholes on this stretch of road. The most recent was a ticket for 8 x potholes with a completion date of 26 October. It could be that these are the potholes you referred to in your email. Unfortunately this stretch of road does seem susceptible to potholes so will continue to be monitored by this department.

Culvert although there is evidence on the surface that the culvert has depressed slightly East Riding of Yorkshire Council bridges team have been out and inspected and believe it to be in a stable condition. This issue was first raised with Highway Maintenance back in March this year and has been monitored closely. The situation will continue to be monitored and should the need arise the culvert will be replaced as we recently did at Thorpe Le Street.

I hope this email is satisfactory with you but if you wish to discuss the contents of it further please don't hesitate to contact me.

Bielby Oil Syndicate

Bielby Oil Syndicate

Did you know that there is an oil syndicate in the village?

It has been running for a few years now – a group of us order our oil together and are able to get better prices as a result. At the moment around 20 households in the village regularly benefit from the syndicate, but it is open to everyone, doesn’t cost you anything, and is all organised via e-mail so it is really straightforward (as long as you check your e-mail regularly!)

How it works

When someone needs a top up they e-mail me (ideally with at least a week’s notice before delivery is needed). I then e-mail the rest of the group to see if anyone else would like a top up, and if so how many litres. Once I have a list of names and quantities required I ring around all the suppliers and ask for a price for the total volume to be delivered to Bielby, which might be say 7,000 litres. The suppliers are keen to secure our order of lots of deliveries within one village as it is very cost efficient for them, instead of driving around from village to village to deliver 500 litres here and there, hence we are offered a very competitive price. There are two suppliers in particular who are very keen to win the syndicate orders. We then go with the supplier who offers us the best price on the day, and I give them a list of who will be ordering and litres required. I then email the people who wanted deliveries with details of the price, who to call to place their order, and the day the oil will be delivered. All you then need to do is ring up and pay for your order as you normally would, quoting Bielby Oil Syndicate.

It’s as simple as that. We just benefit from ordering in bulk, and we always get a better price than you would pay if you were ordering for one drop off on your own. All I do is co-ordinate things so that we can all save a bit of money.

So if you would like to join us, just email me at lisa.hoggarth@hotmail.com and I will add you to the oil syndicate distribution list.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Winners Of The Intervillage Olympics

A big thanks to all those who attended the inter-village olympics back in September, it was an enjoyable afternoon and guess what, Bielby won. So well done Bielby.

Thanks to all those who took part, a winning combo! We had a real mix of ages with the young ones really enjoying themselves, it was great to see so many families attending. The Quigley's and the Smith's made it a real family affair inviting Grandparents to attend and picnics were taken to make a real day of it.

As you can see it was an enjoyable afternoon and great for all the family. Bielby had a good turn out, so thanks Bielby for helping to make this another great event.

Thanks must go to Hayton for organising & hosting the event this year.

We look forward to seeing you all at next year's inter-village olympics which will be hosted by Bielby.
